Message from Mayor Kennith Neilson....
September 2010
Donʼt you wonder where the summer went? The children are back in school already. Itʼs hard to believe! Although the summer seemed to go by quickly, many exciting events took place in our community and county.
Congratulations are in order for two of our Washington City Little League All-Star teams. Our Ten Year-Old team won the Utah State Championship in their division while our Major Division All-Star team won the Utah State Championship. They earned the right to play in the Western Regionals in San Bernardino, California. I know they had an outstanding time playing against some of the best teams in the country.
Thank you to the players, coaches, parents, grandparents, friends and contributing sponsors who made this an unforgettable experience for the boys. This will be something they will remember for a lifetime. For your information the last time Washington City sent a team to the Regionals was 30 years ago. We are proud of how you represented our city.
Perhaps you took the opportunity to attend the many activities at the Washington County Fair. Washington City was the featured community this year. It was interesting to read about our population growth. In 1900 the population of Washington was 529. Today we are well over 20,000. May I quote the last paragraph from the "Spotlight: Washington City" article in the Washington County Fair program:
"More than 135 years ago Washington City was the birthplace of the Southern Utah Cotton Mission. Today, Washington City continues to enjoy its reputation as a leading community in Washington County where families thrive, retired folks flourish, and visitors return again and again to enjoy the mild weather, the friendly people, the awesome landscape and peaceful lifestyle".
The website is full of information about what is going on within our great city. You can stay connected to Washington City through Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, email and chat.
With summer coming to a close, I hope you all are enjoying the fruits of your gardens, that going back to school is a great experience, and are looking forward to all the upcoming fall happenings here in Southern Utah. One of the fall events coming to Washington City in October is "The Wall That Heals". This wall is the Vietnam traveling memorial wall that honors our fallen heroes. We are proud to be able to host this special memorial at our Veterans Park. The wall will be available to view on October 21st at 2:00PM and will be open 24 hours a day until 5:00PM on Sunday October 24th. More information will be available at washingtoncity.org.
May I conclude with this................
"I am hoping the one thing my children say about me is that even though I worked very hard, and was involved in a lot of things, there will be NO QUESTION in their minds that THEY were first, regardless of when or where".
After all, our children are our future.............
