"One a day"

Don’t Waste Dixie is an effort to maintain the beauty of Washington County through clean up and recycling efforts. The theme that has beendeveloped for Don’t Waste Dixie is “One a Day”, realizing that if each person picks up one item of trash or recyclable material each day the resulting effects would be dramatic. By increasing awareness of the issues surrounding waste and recycling, peoples’ habits can be changed and a deeper sense of pride in our community will result.
We would like to invite and encourage each of you to participate in this program. This is a great opportunity to bring the efforts of local governments and civic groups together for the benefit of all that live here. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the quality of life and beauty of Washington County.

REDUCE:
Generate as little trash as possible.  The best way to conserve is to not create the trash in the first place.
On average Americans generate 4.5 pounds of garbage each day.
A plastic bottle of drinking water contains, on average, $.04 worth of water.

What can I do:
•Look for products with less packaging.
•Support the manufacturers and retailers who are working to minimize packaging.
•Take your green waste (lawn clippings, limbs, branches, etc.) to the St. George City Reuse Center.

REUSE:
Find new and different uses for purchased materials.

Americans throw away enough water bottles and aluminum cans that if they were lined end-to-end they would stretch from the earth to the moon 20 times.

What can I do:
•Have a garage sale. Send excess materials (your old treasures) to thrift stores.
•Purchase from thrift stores and garage sales.
•Fix your computer, car or appliance rather than buying a new one.
•Use old containers for organizing.

RECYCLE:

Divert as much recyclable trash from the landfill.

Recycling one aluminum can saves enough electricity to run a
TV for three hours! Americans throw away enough aluminum to
rebuild the entire commercial air fleet every three months.
Go to www.southernutahrecycles.org for more information on the impacts of recycling.

What can I do:
•Participate in a curbside recycling program.
•Take your recyclable materials to a drop off center:
•Rocky Mountain Recycling – 828 N 1080 E.
•Support manufacturers who use recycled materials.  Go to www.mygreenglobe.org for information on eco-friendly products and manufacturers.
•Participate in the Don’t Waste Dixie – E-Waste recycling day – Sept. 27th.
