City Spotlights

It seems to have been a tough year for natural disasters, and Washington City has seen its share. This past summer we experienced several flash flood events that impacted different parts of our community. Every community has some exposure to specific natural occurrences. If you live on the east coast it could be hurricanes, in California it may be wildfires, in our desert southwest it is flash-flooding. Flooding is the most significant risk our area faces, and depending on weather conditions no home is immune from this threat. Knowing that this is our risk, it is a good idea to do a couple of things. First, evaluate the likelihood and potential impact a flood would have on your home and property, and upon completing that take the necessary steps to mitigate vulnerable areas or to lessen the damage an event might create. Often it is not a matter of “if” but “when” an incident may occur and our ability to bounce back will largely depend on our preparation. One option for citizens to consider, especially if they have experienced flooding in the past or are in an unusually vulnerable area, is flood insurance. The National Flood Insurance program is available to everyone and usually at a reasonable cost. If you would like more information you can go to www.fema.gov/national-flood-insurance-program. I hope all of our citizens will stay safe and never have to personally experience such events as these.
