City Spotlights

Give input to your elected officials

A significant responsibility of local government is the proper management and efficient use of tax and revenue dollars. The city spends approximately six months each year preparing the budget for the upcoming year; which begins July 1. During this planning time, we evaluate expenses, project revenues, receive elected officials guidance, and hold public hearings to make all the pieces fit. Unlike the federal government (and many households) we are required to have a balanced budget each year. Not only do we have to ensure that public services are provided efficiently and cost-effectively but we plan and provide for the many capital assets in the community. These facilities make this an enjoyable place to live and enhance our quality of life. These amenities include streets, parks, recreation opportunities, and utility services. There are a lot of moving parts to a budget and many skilled individuals who help put it together. Our current budget is approximately $58 million. As we prepare for the 2019 budget, we hope you will give your input to your elected officials on budget priorities, participate in budget hearings, and take advantage of our online financial dashboard (WashingtonCity.org/finance). We look forward to your participation and believe that an involved community is a strong community.
