 “Your Washington City Discussion Group”

Recently our Information Services Department introduced the “Your Washington City Discussion Group” on Facebook. This site is the official social media forum that will be used by to facilitate discussion between members of the community and leadership and staff of the city. The city has Facebook pages, but this is the first dedicated directly to civil discussion and dialogue. I am sure many of you, like me, have a love-hate relationship with social media. Social media has become an integral part of our lives, and we rely upon it to get immediate information and to stay connected to important people in our lives. It is also used as a platform that allows for conversation without responsibility, anonymous mean-spiritedness, and misinformation. I love public dialogue that is civil and where kindness and respect towards our fellow citizens prevail. On the contrary, dialogue that is personal, rancorous, misleading, and loud is burdensome; and we all know what that looks and feels like. We promise to make this Facebook page a safe place for you to ask questions, express opinions, and to get the facts about what is going on in your community. I encourage each of you to add “Your Washington City Discussion Group” to your Facebook and join in the discussion. You can do so by clicking here.
