Electrical Safety Outside The Home

Spring is here and so begins your outdoor projects and yard work.  Before starting any project always look up to make sure you’re aware of any overhead power lines. Whether you’re working on the roof, trimming trees, or cleaning the gutters, make sure you’re a safe distance from any power line and make sure to warn others of their proximity.  Don’t ever touch anything that’s in contact with a power line such as a tree branch, ladder, or vehicle .  If you ever see a downed power line stay away and call 911.  While most of us are aware of overhead power lines, let’s also remember that power and other utility lines can be buried in and around your yard.  Before you start to dig, always make sure you contact Blue Stakes of Utah (visit bluestakes.org or call 811) and allow time to have the lines located and marked.  Once the area has been marked, make sure you respect and protect the markings during your project and always use hand tools when digging within 2 feet of the located utility lines. If you see anything unusual or concerning in any way please contact your power provider Washington City Power (435) 656-6329 (north of the Virgin River) or Dixie Power (435) 673-3297 (south of the Virgin River).
