Balloon Safety

As graduation and outdoor event season approaches, Washington City Power reminds customers that both metallic (Mylar) and latex balloons can pose a public safety risk and cause power outages. However, Mylar balloons can stay inflated for longer periods, increasing the risk to utility workers and the public. To prioritize safety, follow these tips when handling balloons:

  • Keeping mylar balloons indoors, and away from entrances and exits
  • Tying down mylar balloons with weights, or securely tying them to stationary objects
  • Puncture, deflate and dispose of mylar balloons properly

If you see a Mylar balloon that has contacted a power line, keep yourself, your equipment, and all other items and people, at least 20 feet away. Always assume the power lines are energized. Do not attempt to climb the pole or try to retrieve the object. If you have any questions or concerns you can contact the Power department at (435) 656-6329.
