Council’s Corner
Honoring The Past, Building The Future
Hello, my Washington City friends, I hope all is well with you. The city council has been discussing making some upgrades to the infrastructure of the baseball and softball fields near the community center and cemetery. Some of the structures are nearly 50 years old and need some attention. As we had our discussion, my mind went back to some fond memories of my teenage years spending time at the old pool and racquetball courts. They were torn down years ago to make room for the parking area and part of the cemetery. I spent a lot of summer days hanging out with friends at the pool, keeping cool and building lifelong relationships. I enjoyed playing epic racquetball games with Washington City racquetball legends like Kendall Turner, Kelly Kendall, and Chad Tervo. The racquetball courts in Washington were unique in the fact that the ceiling was made from chicken wire. Washington players were pro in finding ways to use the chicken wire to our advantage when we played players from St. George. I rarely won a game against those great players, and I lost a lot of balls that got stuck in the chicken wire, but I wouldn’t trade my teenage years growing up in Washington for anything. Washington has come a long way from those chicken wire ceiling days. We have so many wonderful parks and recreation facilities that we can all enjoy, with more coming in the next few years. Our community center, golf course, and parks are second to none. Our trail system is beautiful and is becoming more connected all the time. I hope you have a great summer, and let’s be on the lookout for neighbors in need and places where we can serve others.
