Council’s Corner

Let Us Treat Others With Kindness

Hello, my Washington City friends. I hope you are doing well. This time of year reminds me of my first year playing Washington City Little League baseball. It was 1980 and I had recently moved here from Bakersfield California. I was a little nervous at the start of the season being the new kid in town. Our first league meeting was at the new field to get it ready for play. I remember pulling up on my bike and seeing someone out in the infield with a sod cutter, cutting sod out for the base paths. A kind man, Ralph Staheli, motioned for me to come help haul rolls of sod out of the infield and into a pickup truck. I worked hard, side by side with boys and men from the city all afternoon. The entire group treated me with kindness and acceptance. That year our all-star team went on to win the state championship under the leadership of our coaches Burke Staheli and Russ Neilson. We went on to play in the Western Regionals in San Bernadino California. I made lifelong friends that year. I hope as new people move into our community that we can treat them with the same kindness and acceptance that I received as a new 12 year old at the Washington City baseball park. Let’s take time to get to know our neighbors and go out of our way to smile at, or to serve someone that we don’t know. If you ever have any questions or concerns about the city, please contact any of the members of the city council. We are here to serve you.
