Celebrating Opportunities In Sports And The Legacy of Title IX

Washington City is a great place for recreation! There are many opportunities for kids of all ages to participate in a variety of sports at the Washington City Community Center. The Sullivan Soccer Park is one of the most used parks in the region. Our beautiful trails are frequently used for running, walking, and biking. I have always loved playing sports. I grew up with four brothers, and we were outside as often as we could be, playing basketball, football, soccer, and other sports. While I was in elementary school, I would skip lunch so I could beat the boys in claiming a basketball court outside, as there were only 2 courts to play on.  I continued to play basketball all through high school and then went on to play basketball in college with an athletic scholarship. I am grateful for the opportunity to play ball in college and for the experiences I had and how it shaped my character and work ethic. Being involved in sports builds character, leadership skills, team building, work ethic, determination, and other valuable principles.  I hope my daughters and other girls will have the same opportunities that I had to excel in sports, if they choose. Title IX of the Higher Education Amendments of 1972 was passed in part to establish and preserve fairness in women’s athletics. I am grateful for individuals and elected representatives who are defending and standing up for women’s sports and preserving opportunities for women to compete. When males compete in women’s sports, they take opportunities away from women. Only women should play in women’s sports.
