Summer Projects and Plans

Summer is in full swing, and so are a number of exciting projects across Washington City. I wanted to share some brief updates on a few of them happening around town that I think you’ll be proud of, and eager to enjoy once they’re ready!

Washington Wheels Park

The lights are already up, and construction is underway on several major features, including a full skate park, a pump track, a BMX track, a large playground, park spaces, and even a splash pad. We’re building this ” wheels-themed” regional park on George Washington Blvd as a place for everyone, focused on outdoor fun of all kinds.

We know it’s tempting to check it out early, but for your safety, please stay out of the construction area until it’s officially open. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready. Trust me, it will be worth the wait!

Historic Canal Trail

This trail has been a top priority for years. The path primarily follows the original open-ditch canal (now piped), which was historically used to flood-irrigate fields. While some small sections are already complete, we’re ready to do more and see this project take shape. Through  significant effort by staff and coordination with property owners, we’ve acquired dozens of easements and are now moving forward with bidding and building three new trail sections this year, totaling about 1.5 miles:

From Paiute Drive to Indian Springs Drive

From Washington Dam Road to Lost Ridge Drive

From George Washington Blvd to Medallion Drive.

Future sections will be built in conjunction with new development and in working with other current land owners. We’re excited to make this trail system a reality, adding to our already existing 34 miles of asphalt trails throughout the city.

Washington Dome

The city recently secured a $150,000 grant from the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation to fund a feasibility study of Washington Dome. This unique landmark has huge potential, and with help from Avenue Consultants, we’re planning for a future that both preserves the natural hillsides and landscape while defining recreation opportunities, including designated trails and access areas.

We would love your input as we shape this project. Visit: WashingtonDome.com to view maps and take a short survey. Your voice matters.

Baseball & Softball Complex Improvements

We’ve already replaced the lights on the little league field, added new scoreboards and a sound system, and had a batting cage donated by some generous local residents. We’ve also just finished a new monument in center field honoring Tom Jensen, the man whose vision and work made these fields a reality.

Looking ahead, the city council has allocated RAP funds for a conceptual redesign of the old concession stand building in the middle of the ball fields off Community Center Drive. The full scope of work and funding is still being determined, but the idea is to create a modern, functional structure that serves our leagues and families for years to come.

Thanks for taking a few minutes to stay up to date. These projects reflect who we are. In Southern Utah we’re active, connected, and committed to honoring our past while building for the future. I’m proud of where we’re headed, and grateful to be on this journey with all of you.
