Parks Department

Shade Tree Committee

Have you heard of the Shade Tree Committee? This group consists of several citizens,(who have lived in the area for many years and are familiar with the climate and growing conditions), several park employees, city councilman, a member of the forestry dept. and the extension office have been busy planning “urban forests” for several of the parks in the city and putting together a recommended tree list that can be used when considering trees to be planted in residential and commercial areas of the city. This list of recommended trees are ones that do well in our area; heat and frost resilient, grow well in our soil, trees for smaller yards, decorative and ornamental, good for shade, and also trees and bushes that are not recommended because of their poisonous nature. We appreciate all of the work that this committee is doing to help benefit and beautify Washington City.
