Proactive Storm Drain Maintenance

As the monsoon season approaches, it is essential to prepare for the upcoming moisture by ensuring the water is appropriately captured by the storm drain system to prevent flooding and severe damage. The path of stormwater begins in the neighborhoods and commercial areas and travels to creeks and rivers. If any part of the system is not adequately maintained, the possibility for failure and downstream damage is very real. Proper maintenance of storm drain catch basins and inlets helps prevent flooding and water accumulation where it doesn’t belong. Prevention of storm drain system deficiencies through proper maintenance is far easier and less expensive than correcting them after they fail. Washington City routinely inspects and proactively maintains storm drain system features but due to the large number of them throughout the city, some may have issues that are not caught immediately. If you see inlets and drains near you that have visible blockages or debris that would prevent proper drainage, or would drain substances that shouldn’t belong in the river, please notify the Washington City Public Works Department as soon as possible. The City strives to ensure that any debris or buildup is promptly addressed by removing accumulated leaves, dirt, and trash from the drain’s surface and interior. Proactively maintaining the storm drain system also keeps water cleaner from the moment it enters the system and all the way downstream.

If you have any questions or concerns about the storm drain system in Washington City please contact the city Public Works Department at (435) 656-6317 or stormwater@washingtoncity.org.
