Lions Roar

The ancient Indian philosopher Chanakya once said: “The one excellent thing that can be learned from a lion is that whatever a man intends to do, it should be done by him with a whole-hearted and strenuous effort.” Since its founding in 1969, the Washington City Lions Club has been whole-heartedly contributing its efforts in ways that have greatly shaped the landscape and culture of our community. In their early days, the Lions installed the very first street signs, a seemingly small but vital step that ensured our streets were easily navigable for everyone. This act of foresight and community-mindedness laid the foundation for organized growth and prosperity in Washington City.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to the Lions Club for their numerous contributions, including the construction of our first firehouse, a structure that served the community for many years. Another significant project brought to fruition by the Lions Club was the original pavilion at Veterans Park which served as a gathering place for countless community events.

The Washington City Lions Club is part of the Lions International network. Lions International is renowned for its commitment to community service, humanitarian aid, and initiatives to combat blindness. Through membership in Lions International, our local Lions gain access to a wealth of resources, support, and the ability to make not only a global impact but lasting impacts right here at home.

Often seen in their signature yellow shirts, the Lions Club has been an invaluable community partner, leading out and lending their support to the 4th of July in the Park, Pioneer Day, and many other activities year after year. They have selflessly organized and served delicious breakfasts during these events for as long as I can recall. Who knows how many pancakes the Lions have served hot off the griddle?!

We also owe a debt of gratitude to the Lady Lions, affectionately known as the Pie Ladies, for their service. Their tradition of baking delicious pies for the 4th of July festivities is among my favorites. You’re really missing out if you haven’t gotten there early enough for a blueberry or cherry pie!

Some of the best people I have ever known established and built this tradition of service through Lions. I remember as a boy, watching my father snap up his short sleeve, collared shirt, with the Lions logo, and his name stitched in cursive on it, going to Lions Club. There, he and other pillars of the community met for the benefit of our City and its residents. I see many Lions selflessly serving today, but worry that without the next generation picking up the torch, this flame of service may go out.

As we look to the future, I invite community-minded residents of Washington City to consider joining the Lions Club to carry on the legacy of service and camaraderie. By becoming a Lion, you become part of a noble tradition and have the power to make a lasting difference in the future of our City, as others have in the past.

Let us express our gratitude to the Washington City Lions Club for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to our hometown. They show us what it means to be selfless and dedicated members of our community. And to the next generation… Your time to roar is now!
