Washington City Youth Council

Updates

Since 2010 the WCYC has been able to make trips to the capital during a legislative session. This has been made possible thanks to Senator Ipson’s accommodating arrangements made by Carmen Snow.

The youth had a guided night tour of the capitol building on a Sunday and then early morning the next day they sat in on Higher Ed and Criminal Justice appropriation committee meetings. They were introduced to the Senate by Senator Vickers and the House by Representative Jack. They were able to meet and visit with Senator Owens and had a quality visit in the gold room with the Governor and Lt. Governor. The WCYC mayor Sidney Beecher did a wonderful job introducing the youth council theme of, preserving history and cultivating the future; she compared it with what the governor’s office is doing. She oriented them with a sandstone heart that was a representation of Washington City being, ”The heart of Dixie,” which was crafted by Ryan Cruz. They later met with a lobbyist, a fiscal analyst, and a bill writer to explain their roles and their processes and ended with Senator Ipson providing food; Ernie’s great chicken and potato logs. What a wonderful experience for the WCYC! We were honored to have Washington City Mayor Staheli, the city council, and other officials join us on this amazing trip. Special thanks to interns Addison and May and also Katie Hardman Hall for all their help and what they shared with us. Accompanying us were Sherrie Lou Staheli, Nancy Kirk, and our bus driver Arron; who got us there safely.
