Thank You!

Malinda Allison Kelley Covington stood shoulder to shoulder with the men representing the Pioneer Women who, with their help, settled and established Washington, where Dixie began. A beautiful afternoon began with a dedicatory prayer by Steven E Snow, followed by inspiring words from our Utah Lieutenant Governor, Deidre M. Henderson, emphasizing the importance of honoring and remembering all the women and the legacy they left behind. Special thanks go to the city for recognizing the importance of including a woman among the statues, as well as to the Washington City Youth Council for spearheading this initiative. We extend our gratitude to Jerry Anderson, the talented local artist who sculpted her, bringing her to life. We also express our appreciation to all who contributed, including the Washington Lions Club, historical society, community citizens, and businesses. A special thank you goes out to all who participated in the program including Mayor Kress Staheli, Master of Ceremonies Jordan Hess, the Mormon Battalion Baker Boys Phil and Adam, Dr. Melissa Hinton for her beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, and Sergeant Brad Coleman for leading the pledge. We also thank Sherrie Staheli, Chair of Cotton Days, for announcing the Cotton Days Grand Marshal, Gail Cooper Smith. The music was provided by the Jim Sevy Band, and a musical number was performed by Brett Thompson, titled “I Once Lived in Cottonwood.” We extend our gratitude to the entire community for their support, including our Senators, Representatives, County Commissioners, City Council, Chamber of Commerce, amazing city administration, historical society, and the Cahoon family. We also acknowledge the special helpers who worked behind the scenes to make this event a success. Parcila Cahoon planted the seed, and the Washington City Youth Council with their 2022-2023 theme, “Preserve History and Cultivate the Future,” nurtured its growth, emphasizing the need to recognize and keep alive Malinda Allison Kelley Covington’s legacy. We invite you to take the time to visit her statue during Cotton Days. Malinda’s unveiling marked the beginning of Cotton Days, which will run throughout the week, culminating in a special Fireside event on Sunday night at 6:00 PM, honoring the Pioneer Women at the old rec hall. Strength, Sacrifice, and Spirit. You can view that days event on Youtube by clicking here.
