Winter Pruning

Pruning trees, bushes, and mulching leaves to be used for composting purposes. When the leaves have fallen and trees and shrubs are dormant the structure of the tree is much more obvious and actually easier to work on. Proper pruning techniques are essential for not only the aesthetic appeal but more important the overall health of the tree or shrub. Improper pruning could result in disease and weakening of the tree. When pruning the goal is smooth, clean cuts. This will enhance the healing process. All cuts should be made just outside the collar of the branch, which is the area just past where the branch and trunk meet. To avoid tearing of bark if the branch is heavy, first make a cut a couple feet from the trunk to take the majority of the weight off, then make your final cut just as described. The removal of dead bark or diseased branches is also important. These issues could promote further disease or pest infestations. Pruning is not only rewarding to the tree but the overall appearance of the landscape being maintained.
