Safety Tips

Our Open House was a huge success - thank you for stopping by to meet your local firefighters! October was fire safety month and this year was an emphasis on kitchen safety! Continuing into November, the fire department would like to share some additional safety tips for the upcoming holiday season.

  • Turkey fryers that use cooking oil are not safe. These fryers use large amounts of oil at high temperatures, which can cause devastating burns. If you want a fried turkey for your Thanksgiving meal, purchase it from a grocery store, restaurant or buy a fryer that does not use oil.
  • The #1 cause of kitchen fires is leaving food unattended while cooking! If you have to leave, even for a short time, turn off the stove.
  • Always keep an oven mitt and pan lid nearby when you’re cooking. If a small grease fire starts, slide the lid over the pan to smother the flame. Turn off the burner, and leave the pan covered until it is completely cool.
  • Have a “kid-free zone” of at least 3-feet around the stove and areas where hot food or drink is prepared or carried.
