Frequently Asked Questions

Regarding Washington City Main Street Church Building

Question: Why has the decision been made to retire the Washington City Main Street building as a meetinghouse?

Answer: The decision to retire the Washington City Main Street building as a meetinghouse was made after decades of service due to several factors, including the age and condition of the building, lack of adequate on-site parking, and increasing traffic following the opening of the new Main Street interchange. The building is no longer adequately suited to meet the congregation's needs, requiring a facility that can better accommodate its membership and programs.

Question: What will happen to the Washington City Main Street building now that it will no longer be used as a meetinghouse?

Answer: Ownership will be transferred to the city, who will become the stewards of the property. The city plans to repurpose the building for civic and public use with the goal of preserving its cultural heritage and providing a valuable resource for residents. There are no permanent plans for the building beyond the near term, but it will be considered as part of the city’s master plan for the downtown, currently in design.

Question: How has the Main Street building been important to the community?

Answer: The Main Street building has been a cornerstone of the community for generations. It has provided many years of service and holds some historical and cultural value. Even as it transitions from a meetinghouse to a community space, efforts are being made for its continued role in the community.

Question: When will the building be available for public use?

Answer: The meetinghouse will need to be decommissioned as a chapel first. Following that process, the city will determine what work, if any, will need to be done on the building following the decommissioning process.

Question: What kinds of public uses will be allowed (e.g. wedding receptions, concerts, family reunions)?

Answer: Uses will be reviewed under the city’s event policy. We anticipate general community and civic uses will be allowed. Current limited parking on site will limit broad public uses initially. It’s important that appropriate safety measures are considered as part of the event review.
