Cooking safety starts with YOU. October 8-14 is fire prevention week and the theme this year is an emphasis on cooking safety.

Washington City Fire would like to share some key safety tips:

  • Stay Vigilant: Never leave cooking unattended, distractions can lead to accidents.
  • Clear Hazards: Keep flammable items away from the stove and oven.
  • Oil Safety: Never use water to extinguish grease fires.
  • Install Alarms: Ensure working smoke alarms are in your kitchen.
  • Kid-Free Zone: Create a safe zone around cooking areas to prevent burns.
  • Extinguisher Access: Store a kitchen fire extinguisher within easy reach.
  • Safe Habits: Teach safe habits like turning pot handles inward and using back burners.
  • Microwave Fires: In case of a microwave fire, keep the door closed and unplug it.
  • Escape Plan: Establish a fire escape plan and practice it regularly.

Promote these tips to reduce cooking-related fires, keeping homes and loved ones safe. October 7th is the annual Open House at fire station 61, check out social media for more details!
