Steward Health Care Moving Forward With Plan to Build New Hospital in Washington City, Utah

Washington City — On Monday September 20th, HCA Healthcare Inc. and Steward Health Care announced an agreement for HCA Healthcare, known in Utah as MountainStar Healthcare, to acquire the operations of Steward Health Care’s five Utah hospitals. The following hospitals, all of which joined the Steward network in 2017 will become part of HCA Healthcare’s Mountain Division:

  • Davis Hospital (Layton)
  • Jordan Valley Medical Center (West Jordan)
  • Jordan Valley Medical Center – West Valley Campus (West Valley City)
  • Mountain Point Medical Center (Lehi)
  • Salt Lake Regional Medical Center (Salt Lake City)

In March, Steward Health Care announced that it had finalized a deal to build a new state-of-the-art hospital serving communities within the St. George, Utah area, one of the fastest-growing metropolitan areas in the United States. A location near Washington City’s Exit 13, and at the center of southern Utah’s growing population, was selected for the site and the project was slated to break ground in July.

After some delays and since Monday’s acquisition announcement, there has been speculation within the community about whether construction of the new hospital would be moving forward or not.

Today, Brad Hardy, National Director of Steward Health Care Corporate Real Estate informed Washington City staff that, “Steward's intent is to move forward building its new facility in Washington City”. The planned southern Utah hospital which is in pre-construction now, was not part of HCA Healthcare's recent acquisition.

Steward is currently investing in construction of the facility, which despite a slight delay in the projected groundbreaking is still on track to begin serving patients in late 2023. Washington City is pleased to continue working with Steward and will continue to keep residents informed about the anxiously anticipated development.

Steward’s new southern Utah hospital will offer a full range of care including orthopedics, cardiovascular care, neurosurgery, and other outpatient services, with additional compatible medical facilities set to open on the same campus. Steward’s investments in new patient care options will provide choice in a fast-developing area, as more than 900 planned single-family housing units are currently under development nearby with another 2,200 to follow.
