Mental Health Awareness

The Washington City Police Department would like to share a few words on Mental Health Awareness. As officers, we are dispatched to all needs in the community. Some incidents may be categorized as “routine” but others are more dynamic and require some special training and skills. We recognize that we can’t be experts in all fields, but in some areas we do spend some additional time preparing. Handling incidents with people who are in a mental health crisis takes additional training and skills. The police department wants to be a valuable resource to these individuals, and to the community when our response is needed. The police department has officers that have been trained by CIT Utah.  “CIT Utah is a program of the State of Utah.  The CIT Utah program develops and sustains partnerships between criminal justice services, behavioral healthcare services, and community members.  These partnerships provide three basic services: the training of law enforcement officers and other first responders in proper methods of crisis response and resolution, the developing of effective crisis response systems, and advocating for accessible behavioral health services and programming.” ( May was Mental Health Awareness Month. The National Alliance on Mental Health(NAMI) is a great source for families and others to gain information on ways to help those who suffer from mental illness. We want to be prepared for those that need our assistance, that may be in crisis, but also want to be a part of a greater plan and support families and other community members.

We believe in the same vision as NAMI which is; that “NAMI envisions a world where all people affected by mental illness live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a community that cares.” (

The Washington City Police Department does care about all members of the community. We encourage our community to be mindful of the needs of others and to also be that helping hand to those who may not be able to help themselves.
