CITIZENS ACADEMY

Description of the Academy

The Citizen Police Academy (CPA) is a five (5) week program that meets once a week on Wednesday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. This program is designed to provide members of the Washington City community with additional knowledge about their police department. It allows citizens of Washington City to become more educated on Washington City Police Department procedure and the pressures associated within law enforcement. We seek and invite a diverse group of people that either live in or work in the City of Washington to apply. Requirements include that you must be at least 21 years of age, have no felony convictions, and have no misdemeanor convictions within the last 3 years. There is no cost to attendthe Citizen Police Academy.

 

The purpose of the Citizen Police Academy is to accomplish three goals:

  1. To educate community members in Washington City Police Department procedures and the pressures associated within law enforcement.

 

  1. To allow the citizens of Washington City to develop a partnership with their Police Department members.

 

  1. To provide Washington City Police Department staff the opportunity to meet the citizens they serve, and provide the opportunity for our community members to share ideas, thoughts and concerns as we discuss various topics throughout the academy.

 

The Citizen Police Academy willprovide a realistic view of the Police Department's functions and why they do what they do.

  • Community Policing
  • "Meet the Chief"
  • Laws of Arrest
  • Search and Seizure
  • Communications
  • Internal Affairs
  • Criminal Investigations
  • Crime Scene Processing and Forensics
  • Patrol Operations
  • Canine Unit
  • Special Response Team
  • Use of Force Training
  • Traffic Stops

 

The academy meets once a week at the Washington City Community Center.

Presentations consist of lectures, demonstrations, videos, computer presentations, and "hands on" participation. Each participant is given the opportunity to do aride along with an officer during the academy.

 

Who Can Apply?

For each academy, the Washington City Police Department seeks a diverse group of participants. All participants must:

  • Live or work in the City of Washington
  • Be at least 21 years of age
  • Have NO prior felony convictions
  • Have NO misdemeanor convictions within the last three years
